Filho dos nobres florentinos Bernardo di Niccolò Machiavelli, um advogado de certa reputação, e sua esposa, Bartolomea di Stefano Nelli, Nicolau Maquiavel nasceu em Florença, no dia 03 de maio de 1469. Iniciou sua carreira no governo da República de Florença com a queda de Girolamo Savonarola, sendo que teve participação política e diplomática ativa desde então, fato que serviu de base para seus princípios sobre a arte de governar. Em 1512, com a queda da república florentina e a volta da família Médici ao poder, Maquiavel foi preso, suspeito de conspiração, torturado e enviado ao exílio, época em que escreveu sua mais célebre O Príncipe. Morreu em junho de 1527, um mês após adoecer.
