Civil engineers are responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of civil engineering projects, including buildings, bridges, roads, dams, and other infrastructure. They work in all sectors of the economy, from residential and commercial construction to transportation, energy, and water resources.
What Does a Civil Engineer Do?
Civil engineers typically work in offices, but they may also spend time on construction sites or in the field. Their day-to-day responsibilities can include:
- Planning and designing civil engineering projects, including the layout, materials, and construction methods
- Overseeing the construction of civil engineering projects, ensuring that the work is completed according to plans and specifications
- Inspecting and maintaining civil engineering projects, identifying and repairing any damage or defects
- Preparing reports and presenting findings on civil engineering projects to clients, contractors, and government agencies
- Managing teams of engineers, technicians, and contractors
How to Become a Civil Engineer
To become a civil engineer, you will need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field. Some states also require civil engineers to be licensed. To obtain a license, you will need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam.
