Types of Aircraft Maintenance Technicians

There are two main types of Aircraft Maintenance Technicians:

  • Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanics work on the structural components of the aircraft, such as the fuselage, wings, landing gear, and engines.
  • Avionics Technicians specialize in the maintenance and repair of the aircraft's electrical and electronic systems, such as the navigation, communication, and flight control systems.

Education and Training

To become an Aircraft Maintenance Technician, you will need to complete an approved training program. Most programs take about 18 months to 2 years to complete and include a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training. Upon completion of your training, you will need to pass a written exam and an oral and practical exam administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to obtain your A&P license.
