Optical Device Designer
Optical Device Designers focus on creating, designing, and evaluating optical devices. These include cameras, telescopes, fiber optics, eyeglass lenses, and other equipment. They also include the actual optical technology itself which can be found in lasers, imagers, and mirrors. Optical Device Designers may also work on identifying and solving optical problems during the development of other products such as computer screens, lighting, and displays.
What Does an Optical Device Designer Do?
As an Optical Device Designer, you would be generating ideas and designs for optical products, as well as analyzing and testing optical systems. You will also write specifications for the devices you design.
On a day-to-day basis, an Optical Device Designer is typically occupied with tasks involving:
- Designing optical devices using computer-aided design (CAD) software
- Analyzing the performance of optical systems using mathematical models and simulation software
- Testing optical devices and systems to ensure that they meet specifications
- Working with other engineers and scientists to develop new optical technologies
- Writing technical reports and presentations
What is the Career Path for Optical Device Designers?
Optical Device Designers typically have a bachelor's degree in optical engineering, physics, or a related field. Some employers may also require a master's degree or doctorate. Entry-level positions are often available for those with a bachelor's degree and some experience in optical design.
