The role of an RF Technician, also known as a radio frequency technician, is a career that involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of radio frequency (RF) systems. Radio frequency systems are used in a wide variety of applications, including telecommunications, broadcasting, and aviation.
Responsibilities
RF Technicians are responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing RF antennas and transmission lines
- Testing and troubleshooting RF equipment
- Calibrating and aligning RF systems
- Working with other technicians and engineers to solve technical problems
Education and Training
RF Technicians typically have a high school diploma or equivalent, and many have also completed an associate's degree or a vocational training program.
Some RF Technicians also choose to get licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC offers several licenses, including the General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) and the Amateur Extra Class License.
Skills and Abilities
RF Technicians should have a strong understanding of RF theory and principles. They should also be able to work with a variety of electrical and electronic equipment, and have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
In addition, RF Technicians must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

RF Technicians can advance their careers by gaining experience and by completing additional training.
Some RF Technicians may choose to become certified by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE). The SBE offers several certifications, including the Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT) and the Certified Broadcast Engineer (CBE).
