Cardiovascular Surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. They perform surgeries to repair or replace damaged or diseased parts of the cardiovascular system, and they also provide medical management for patients with heart disease.
Education and Training
To become a Cardiovascular Surgeon, you must first earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. The most common undergraduate majors for Cardiovascular Surgeons are biology, chemistry, and physics. After graduating from college, you must attend medical school and earn a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. During medical school, you will take coursework in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and other medical subjects. You will also complete clinical rotations in a variety of medical specialties, including cardiology, surgery, and internal medicine.
After completing medical school, you must complete a residency program in Cardiovascular Surgery. Residency programs typically last for five years, and they provide you with the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge necessary to practice Cardiovascular Surgery. During residency, you will rotate through different clinical services, and you will perform a variety of surgical procedures under the supervision of experienced Cardiovascular Surgeons.
