What is a Sales Manager?

Sales Managers are primarily responsible for leading sales teams and developing successful business strategies. Sales Managers set sales goals, monitor the performance of their sales team members, provide on-the-job training to their teams, and evaluate sales performance to help teams exceed targets. Sales Managers motivate their teams to achieve company revenue goals by communicating the organization's goals and values, planning and organizing sales initiatives, and analyzing trends in sales data. One common career path into Sales Management begins as a salesperson, a position in which one may develop skills in sales, negotiation, and relationship building. Sales Management may also be entered through Business Management or a related field, such as Marketing or Communications. If entering Sales Management from a different field, one should expect to develop sales skills and business acumen either through formal education or on-the-job training.

To be successful in Sales Management, one should develop leadership skills, the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from all backgrounds, and proficiency in planning, organization, and data analysis. A self-motivated, goal-oriented approach is helpful, as Sales Managers are often responsible for motivating those they lead, setting challenging but attainable goals, and remaining focused on their own as well as their teams' success.
