Neonatal Physician Assistants are healthcare professionals who provide medical care to newborns and their families. They work under the supervision of a neonatologist, a doctor who specializes in newborn care. Neonatal Physician Assistants perform a variety of tasks, including:
- Providing routine care to newborns, such as feeding, bathing, and changing diapers
- Assessing newborns for health problems
- Performing physical exams
- Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests
- Prescribing medications
- Counseling families on newborn care
Skills and Education
Neonatal Physician Assistants must have a strong foundation in science and medicine. They must be able to think critically and make decisions quickly. They must also be able to work well with others, including other healthcare professionals, families, and patients.
Neonatal Physician Assistants typically need a bachelor's degree in a science-related field, such as biology or nursing. They must also complete an accredited Neonatal Physician Assistant program. These programs typically take two years to complete and include coursework in newborn care, pharmacology, and neonatology.
Once they have completed their education, Neonatal Physician Assistants must pass a national certification exam. They must also maintain their certification by completing continuing education courses.
