Customs and Border Protection Officer
Job Duties and Responsibilities
As a Customs and Border Protection Officer, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
- Enforcing U.S. laws and regulations at ports of entry
- Examining travelers’ passports and visas
- Inspecting baggage and cargo for contraband
- Interviewing travelers to assess their purpose of entry
- Seizing contraband and apprehending individuals in violation of the law
- Testifying in court proceedings
- Maintaining security at ports of entry
Education and Qualifications
To become a Customs and Border Protection Officer, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be in good physical condition
- Pass a background investigation
While not required, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field can be beneficial.
Training
After you are hired as a Customs and Border Protection Officer, you will receive comprehensive training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. Training will cover topics such as:
- U.S. laws and regulations
- Customs and border protection procedures
- Use of force
- Firearms training
- First aid and CPR
Career Growth
As a Customs and Border Protection Officer, you can advance to supervisory and management positions. With additional experience and education, you may also be eligible for promotion to other positions within the Department of Homeland Security.
