Science Professor
Science Professors are experts in a field of science who teach, research, and serve the community. There is a wide variety of topics a Science Professor can choose to specialize in, from the vast universe studied in astronomy, to the tiny organisms studied in microbiology. The field in which they specialize will greatly impact their day-to-day tasks, but some common duties Science Professors share include teaching students, researching in their field of study, and contributing to their community through outreach and other activities. They work in a variety of settings, such as secondary schools, colleges, universities, research labs, and museums.
Prerequisites
Science Professors typically hold a Master's degree or PhD in their field of specialty. Some may also have a background in Education. While in school, a Science Professor will study topics relevant to their future teaching and research, such as physics, biology, chemistry, and astronomy. Students of any field within science who intend to become a Science Professor will also complete coursework in education and pedagogy. Beyond their degree, most Science Professors complete post-doctoral work in their field of specialization.
Skills
Science Professors need to have strong research, problem solving, communication, and teaching skills. They should also be able to work independently and as part of a team. Additionally, Science Professors should be able to stay up-to-date on the latest advances in their field. This role would be a good fit for someone who is passionate about science education and about sharing their love of learning with others. They should also have a strong commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.
