- Singular form

- Case 1: Serve as a kind of indefinite pronoun (i.e. people, others)

How to translate 嘅 ?

1. Before a possessed noun

1. As predicates, usually following the verb 係 (be)

How about “係”?

The verb 係 (be) can also be understood, so that we sometimes eliminate the verb.

Omit possession?

Sometimes, the嘅 indicating possession can be omitted, especially where there is a close intrinsic relationship between the possessor and possessed, as in the case of relatives and family members.

Always use possession 嘅?

Before nouns, the appropriate classifier is often used in place of 嘅, especially in spoken Cantonese.

Possession and existence 有 (jau5), like ‘have’ in English, serves both as a main verb and as an auxiliary. Like all verbs in Cantonese, it keeps the same form for different persons.

negative form of 有 is irregular, written as 冇

How to form question with 有 (jau5)

有 can also mean ‘there is’.

Similarly, 冇 (mou5) can mean ‘There is not’ and 有 (jau5) 冇 (mou5) ‘Is there…?’

We have some special situations in spoken Cantonese of 有.

有 as auxiliary

有 also serves as an auxiliary verb, rather like ‘have’ in English,

but normally only in the negative form 冇 and in questions as 有冇

有 and 冇 can also be added to nouns to form adjectives
