Курс рассказывает о процессах, происходящих в русской литературе, начиная с позднесоветского времени и до наших дней. В ходе изложения выявляются истоки формирования постмодернистской литературы, ее сходство и различие с западной литературой, рассказывается о судьбе массовой литературы, о творческом пути ведущих представителей литературы 1990-х годов – Владимира Сорокина, Виктора Пелевина, Бориса Акунина, Татьяны Толстой, Михаила Шишкина и др. Курс дает представление о широком спектре тем, жанров и стилей новой русской литературы. Во второй половине курса описывается «возвращение реализма» в русскую литературу, тенденция к созданию антиутопий, интерес современных писателей к истории, мифу и фольклору, сближение «элитарной» и «массовой» литературы, возвращение к проблематике военной и лагерной литературы позднесоветского периода. В заключение курса дается обзор имен и произведений писателей, недавно дебютировавших в литературе, но уже сумевших получить признание критики и читателей. Таким образом, курс носит информативно-общеобразовательный характер и позволяет обучающимся сориентироваться в бескрайнем море современной словесности.
