El objetivo de este curso es apoyar a las empresas de agua y saneamiento urbano para que transiten hacia una gestión resiliente frente al cambio climático a través de la disminución de sus emisiones de carbono.

En este curso, que consta de 4 módulos, se aborda el concepto de cambio climático, su impacto, riesgos y acciones que se pueden emplear para su mitigación, específicamente en empresas de agua y saneamiento. En esta línea, se presenta una introducción al financiamiento climático y cómo las empresas pueden obtener financiamiento a partir de proyectos que reflejen beneficios climáticos.

Además, se desarrolla una hoja de ruta centrada en acciones que pueden realizar las empresas de agua y saneamiento para reducir sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Con el fin de evaluar la huella de carbono, medir la eficiencia energética e identificar oportunidades para mejorar el rendimiento en el sector urbano del agua, se presenta la primera herramienta en el sector que permite un enfoque holístico del ciclo urbano del agua denominada ECAM (por sus siglas en inglés); Evaluación y Monitoreo del Desempeño Energético y Emisiones de Carbono.

Parte del material fue producido por el proyecto Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM) (2013-2022), una iniciativa conjunta entre GIZ y la Asociación Internacional del Agua (IWA). Este proyecto formó parte de la Iniciativa Climática Internacional (IKI), financiada por el Gobierno Federal de Alemania.

En este curso se aborda el proceso para apoyar a las empresas de agua y saneamiento urbano para transitar a la disminución de sus emisiones de carbono para combatir al cambio climático y beneficiarse a su vez de los impactos que este proceso implica. Veremos los cinco pasos de la hoja de ruta para llevar a cabo este proceso, así como el uso de la herramienta de Evaluación y Monitoreo del Desempeño Energético y Emisiones de Carbono (ECAM, por sus siglas en inglés) la cual sirve entre otras cosas para evaluar la huella de carbono y medir la eficiencia energética. Finalmente concluiremos abordando los riesgos climáticos en empresas de agua y saneamiento urbano, así como metodologías para la evaluación de estos.

Módulo 1: El cambio climático en el sector urbano del agua
En este módulo inicial del curso abordaremos conceptos básicos como el cambio climático, también revisaremos de qué manera empresas de agua y saneamiento contribuyen a este cambio y a la vez sufren impactos ocasionados por éste, y finalmente, exploraremos acciones que se pueden emplear para la mitigación y adaptación del cambio climático.
Módulo 2: Hoja de ruta hacia una empresa de agua y saneamiento urbano con bajas emisiones de carbono
En este módulo nos centraremos en acciones que pueden hacer las empresas de agua y saneamiento para reducir sus emisiones de carbono a partir de cinco pasos de una hoja de ruta.
Módulo 3: Cálculo de emisiones de GEI en empresas de agua y saneamiento
En este módulo aprenderemos sobre las diferentes emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) producidas en el sector urbano del agua, y aprenderemos a utilizar la herramienta ECAM para analizar las emisiones GEI en las empresas con el fin de identificar oportunidades para mejorar su rendimiento y reducir las emisiones.
Módulo 4: Riesgos climáticos en empresas de agua y saneamiento urbano
En este último módulo del curso estudiaremos cuáles son algunos de los riesgos climáticos para la gestión de agua y aguas residuales a través de metodologías disponibles para evaluarlos, así como la forma en que se pueden reducir.
