In this lecture we will identify in detail OSHA's safety standard for Excavation, Trenching, and Soil Mechanics. In addition to gaining knowledge of the specific standard, we will also talk about how to be a well rounded set of "safety eyes" for all aspects of the job.

In this lecture we will discuss what OSHA's standard is in regards to trenching and excavation and the "big picture" outline for this course.

Identify the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) for OSHA's Excavations, Trenches, and Soil Mechanics Regulations.

Return home to the one's who love you in the same manner, if not better, than when you left for work. Understand the employer's requirements as well as each individuals responsibilities that will ensure lives are saved.

In this lecture we will discuss basic definitions that will give you a solid baseline for completing this course successfully.

Understand the requirements that will keep you safe and alive. We will also discuss the difference between a trench and an excavation.

Get those cognitive juices flowing. Lets do a preliminary job site inspection and get our minds ready to tackle the rest of this course.

In this lecture we will discuss the hazards that exist and how to identify them. We will learn how these hazards are caused, what causes cave-ins, and how to avoid them.

Understand, and enable life saving skills, through proper identification of a confined space.

Increase your expertise and correlate how confined spaces relate to trenches and excavations, and the hazards that a confined space creates. We will identify various examples of a confined space and the dangers that lurk within due to the hazardous atmospheres they cause and then wrap up with other examples of trench hazards and job site inspection.

Conduct an inspection of a job site. We will learn to identify evidence that a cave-in is imminent. We will discuss other safety issues and standards related to the job site, and how to protect and safeguard yourself and your fellow workers.

This lecture is an introduction to safety techniques and procedures to be used now that we know that work must be done inside of a trench or an excavation. Identify who the Competent Person is, and his or her role and responsibilities to the team. We will discuss planning skills that will keep you and your colleagues safe and help you shine as an exemplary employee giving your management a reason to move you up!

After this lecture you will prove that you have the knowledge and expertise as a safe employee or Health and Safety Officer by demonstrating your ability to perform a field soil analysis.
