Module 2
Arithmetic operations including dividing by a fraction
6th grade (Eureka Math/EngageNY),
"Students expand their understanding of the number system and build their fluency in arithmetic operations in Module 2. Students learned in Grade 5 to divide whole numbers by unit fractions and unit fractions by whole numbers. Now, they apply and extend their understanding of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. The meaning of this operation is connected to real-world problems as students are asked to create and solve fraction division word problems. Students continue (from Fifth Grade) to build fluency with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing multi-digit decimal numbers using the standard algorithms." This course contains 4 segments:
Topic A: Dividing fractions by fractions
Topic A includes lessons 1-8 and covers interpreting division of a fraction by a whole number—visual models, interpreting division of a whole number by a fraction—visual models, interpreting and computing division of a fraction by a fraction—more models, creating division stories, more division stories, the relationship between visual fraction models and equations, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
Topic B: Multi‐digit decimal operations—adding, subtracting, and multiplying
Topic B includes lessons 9-11 and covers sums and differences of decimals, the distributive property and the products of decimals, and fraction multiplication and the products of decimals. (Currently, we do not have content for Lesson 11.)
Topic C: Dividing whole numbers and decimals
Topic C includes lessons 12-15 and covers estimating digits in a quotient, dividing multi-digit numbers using the algorithm, the division algorithm—converting decimal division into whole number division using fractions, and the division algorithm—converting decimal division into whole number division using mental math.
Topic D: Number theory—thinking logically about multiplicative arithmetic
Topic D includes lessons 16-19 and covers even and odd numbers, divisibility tests for 3 and 9, least common multiple and greatest common factor, and the Euclidean algorithm as an application of the long division algorithm. (Currently, we do not have content for Lesson 19.)
