El curso trata básicamente de las características morfológicas y físicas, los procesos evolutivos y tipos de estrellas. Se puede considerar como una profundización, en relación a las estrellas, del curso: Astronomía Virtual.

Sin embargo, no requiere haber cursado el mencionado Curso para poder inscribirse y avanzar.

Aborda aspectos relacionados con la investigación actual acerca de ciertas estrellas, así como ideas acerca de la investigación histórica, que ayudan a comprender el “cómo” se llega al conocimiento aceptado en la actualidad acerca de las estrellas.

El curso inicia con una aproximación descriptiva acerca del aspecto de las estrellas y los grupos de estrellas en el cielo, y de las formas en las cuales se las ha investigado.

Tratándose de cuerpos que se hallan a enormes distancias, los métodos de investigación suelen ser muy elaborados y específicos, y llaman la atención de los no-iniciados, luego el curso comienza a abordar los diferentes procesos físicos que tienen lugar en las diferentes capas del interior de las estrellas, siempre mostrando las consecuencias observables de los mismos y las formas en las cuales se llegó a postular la existencia de tales mecanismos y cómo se ha comprobado su existencia, de formas siempre indirectas.

Por último, el curso aborda cuestiones relacionadas con las estrellas variables, un tópico muchas veces relegado en cursos iniciales, pero que reviste crucial importancia, dado que el descubrimiento y estudio detallado de las estrellas variables periódicas aportó información básica para comprender una multitud de procesos físicos que no se pueden reproducir en laboratorio, así como para comprender la evolución de las estrellas e, incluso, las escalas de distancias involucradas.
