Module 7

8th grade (Eureka Math/EngageNY),

"By Module 7 students have been using the Pythagorean Theorem for several months. They are sufficiently prepared to learn and explain a proof of the theorem on their own. The Pythagorean Theorem is also used to motivate a discussion of irrational square roots (irrational cube roots are introduced via volume of a sphere). Thus, as the year began with looking at the number system, so it concludes with students understanding irrational numbers and ways to represent them (radicals, non-repeating decimal expansions) on the real number line. This course contains 4 segments:

Topic A: Square and cube roots

Topic A includes lessons 1-5 and covers the Pythagorean theorem, square roots, existence and uniqueness of square roots and cube roots, simplifying square roots (Optional), and solving equations with radicals.

Topic B: Decimal expansions of numbers

Topic B includes lessons 6-14 and covers finite and infinite decimals, infinite decimals, the long division algorithm, decimal expansions of fractions, converting repeating decimals to fractions, the decimal expansion of some irrational numbers, comparing irrational numbers, and decimal expansion of pi. (Currently, we do not have content for Lesson 8 and 14.)

Topic C: The Pythagorean theorem

Topic A includes lessons 15-18 and covers Pythagorean theorem, converse of the Pythagorean theorem, distance on the coordinate plane, and applications of the Pythagorean theorem.

Topic D: Applications of radicals and roots

Topic D includes lessons 19-23 and covers cones and spheres, truncated cones, volume of composite solids, average rate of change, and nonlinear motion.
