Design Thinking, while it's been around for a while, is gaining momentum around the globe for its flexible, yet structured approach to product design or enhancement.  In the world of application design, where "user experience" is a huge factor in successful user adoption - and most critically in enterprise applications - following a design thinking protocol in a user-centric approach can dramatically increase user adoption, and cut your development time in half.

This course is a precursor to more in-depth study, and by taking notes and using the downloadable outline provided, you'll gain an understanding of the importance of UX and Design Thinking for every application design project you work on.

Understand how UX and UI are different yet connected, and why research is a key factor in the success of your application design projects.

Why This is Important to You

If you're a developer or application designer, there are critical, foundational factors to consider. Understanding that your role can either make or break the project is critical to your success.

Understanding how UX and UI differ, and also how they are both important to a successful outcome of every project is important for you, and for your users, stakeholders, and sponsors.

So why do we do this and why does it matter?

Every user will come to your application with expectations.  Make sure you understand them and design an application that matters.

This is a mindmap model that explains all the important considerations an application developer should be aware of and understand.

How Design Thinking Increases Success

So what is Design Thinking anyway?  It's a systematic approach within a UX project that ensures greater levels of success through higher adoption rates.

What's it look like?  How do we do it?  Do I have to bring my computer?  Do I take notes?  I heard something about markers.

Okay but what's going on in there?  Why are we doing all that?

The Role of UI in Your Project

Understanding exactly what UI is and its role in your application is key.  Don't mistake it for UX.  It's a part of UX, but it is not UX.

The workflow is the user's path through your application in the course of doing a task or fulfilling an objective.

Get this right and you'll have a fan club following you around at work.  Get it wrong and...

Empathy is Your Strongest Asset

Empathy is a huge concept and practice in Design Thinking research and you need to understand and practice it in every project.

Run through of a scenario to show visually, and explain what you do and why you're doing it in every user interview session you conduct.

The Importance of a Cross-Functional Team

What we mean by "cross-functional" and why it's important to successful projects.

Level of experience can become an important aspect of your team dynamics.

Who the facilitator is and what they do for the team.

What the primary interviewer means to the team and to the users who come for interviews.

The role and importance of the team members.

By understanding the changes rapidly approaching with AI, students can feel confident that they have the skills to take their UX careers to the next level.
