Linear equations and inequalities

This course is a part of Algebra basics, a 8-course Topic series from Khan Academy.

We will now equate two algebraic expressions and think about how it might constrain what value the variables can take on. The algebraic manipulation you learn here really is the heart of algebra.

This course contains 7 segments:

One-step equations

Solve equations by adding/subtracting numbers from both sides, or by multiplying/dividing both sides by the same number.

Two-steps equations

Learn how to solve equations like 2x+7=13 and 3(x+4)=3, which can be solved in two steps.

Multi-step equations

Learn how to solve linear equations that have the variable on both sides of the equation. For example, solve 2x+5=6x-3. Also learn how to solve linear equations with expressions in parentheses. For example, 3(x-1)=9.

One-step inequalities

Learn how to solve (mathematical) inequalities. A key concept in this tutorial is flipping the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number.

Two-step inequalities

Learn how to solve more complex (mathematical) inequalities. Also learn to construct inequalities to model real-world situations.

Multi-step inequalities

Solve any possible linear inequality in one variable. For example, solve -3x-7
