Por su parte, movimientos sociales de mujeres, feministas y LGBTIQ+ se han posicionado como actores de relevancia en el reconocimiento de derechos y en la transformación social, política y cultural del mundo a escalas nacionales, regionales y globales.

Asimismo, activismos contrarios a estas luchas han suscitado movilizaciones sociales para incidir en agendas gubernamentales, frenar el avance de estos derechos y posicionar a la familia heterosexual como depositaria única de valores sociales y reguladora de comportamientos relacionados con el sexo.

Mientras tanto, en varios países, se discute el matrimonio igualitario, la despenalización del aborto, la intervención de las violencias basadas en género y discriminación, la enseñanza de educación sexual en las escuelas o el reconocimiento legal de identidades trans y no binarias, el acceso a procesos de afirmación de género en menores de edad, entre otros temas.

Estos debates han desbordado las esferas parlamentarias y académicas, para circular con gran vitalidad en las calles, las redes sociales y distintos espacios de la vida cotidiana. Pero, ¿qué son el género y la sexualidad? ¿Serán atributos que definen qué y quién es cada persona, cada cuerpo? Si se trata de características individuales asociadas a la intimidad y al fuero interno, ¿por qué suscitan tan acalorados debates en el ámbito legislativo, en las elecciones presidenciales, en medios de comunicación o en instituciones como la escuela y la universidad?

Este curso brinda una introducción al género y la sexualidad como órdenes sociales que regulan la vida de las personas, estructuran las relaciones sociales, participan en la producción de corporalidades y subjetividades y operan como poderosas matrices de significación. Su comprensión requiere, desde una perspectiva crítica, vincularlos con el poder, así como con posibilidades de transformación del mundo.
