Reviews summary

Advanced lexical semantics

This advanced course examines the lexicon through a lexical semantics perspective using the method developed by the Moscow Lexical Typology Group (MLexT). The course introduces students to the methodology, which is used to identify semantic systems and processes in the lexicon. Students will study cross-linguistic descriptions of several semantic fields, including systems of verbs of motion, falling, and qualitative terms for old age. The course also explores the description of derived pain predicates and the cross-linguistically relevant sources for metaphors, linguistic processes, and special features manifested by source verbs of different semantics in this process. Overall, students have praised the course's excellent content, clear explanations, and stimulating and rich experience.
Explores metaphorical transformations of word use.
"As a poet, I appreciated especially the metaphorical transformations of word use translated from other languages."
Examines derived pain predicates.
"The description of derived pain predicates (Lectures 5-6)"
Provides cross-linguistic analysis of semantic fields.
"The cross-linguistics description of several semantic fields according to MLexT, case studies"
Introduces MLexT methodology for studying lexicon.
"The detailed description of Moscow Lexical Typology Group methodology (frame approach) as compared to the other frameworks in the field of lexical semantics (Lecure 1)"
Students suggest improvements to the courseware.
"This topic and the teacher are absolutely outstanding, nevertheless I would like to suggest coursware improvements."
