But, if you want to add a layer that could be more specific to the type of work you do - navigate to the Layer Properties tab. When you open up the Layer Properties tab, you'll see that there are no layers populated in the dialog box.

Best practices to layer management is to add a “L” to generalize these layers belonging to the landscape designer/architect of the project.
Each layer can have it’s own distinct color to communicate the differences, however typically red is the thinnest and white is the thickest in the Index Colors.
If you wanted to specify a lineweight differently, lineweights can go up to as thick as 2.1 mm and you can change the linetype to a dash or dot line.
As mentioned prior, the most important aspect about layers in AutoCAD is that you can turn off certain elements of your drawing to revise quicker. If you want to turn off all of the line work that is on one layer- you can either use Turn Off / Freeze. There are also options to lock layers if you choose so.
Lastly, when it comes to plotting your landscape plan on a piece of paper, certain linework can be hidden when printed but within AutoCAD, you can still see linework (often referred to Construction Lines). To set up a non-printable line, simply click on the “Printer” symbol in Layer Properties until you see a red “X” over the printer. These construction lines are helpful when connecting elements in the landscape together.
