Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is an American insurance company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. It is the sixth-largest property and casualty insurer in the United States and the 13th-largest insurer in the world. The company offers a wide range of insurance products, including auto, home, business, and life insurance. It also provides a number of financial services, such as retirement planning and investment management.

History

Liberty Mutual was founded in 1912 by a group of businessmen who were concerned about the high cost of workers' compensation insurance. The company's first policy was written in 1913, and it quickly became a major provider of workers' compensation insurance to businesses in Massachusetts. In the years that followed, Liberty Mutual expanded its operations to other states and began offering a wider range of insurance products.

In 1951, Liberty Mutual acquired the American Motorists Insurance Company, which gave it a foothold in the personal auto insurance market. The company continued to expand its auto insurance business in the years that followed, and it is now one of the largest auto insurers in the United States.

In 1978, Liberty Mutual acquired the Safeco Insurance Company, which gave it a major presence on the West Coast. The company continued to expand its operations in the years that followed, and it now has operations in all 50 states and in more than 30 countries.
