What are Wind Turbines and How Do They Work?
A wind turbine is a device that captures the wind's kinetic energy and transforms it into electrical power. Unlike a fan that uses electricity to create wind, a wind turbine does the opposite. The wind causes the turbine's blades, which are aerodynamically designed much like airplane wings, to rotate. This rotation spins a shaft connected to a generator, either directly or through a gearbox that increases the rotational speed. The generator then converts this mechanical energy into electricity.
The process begins when wind speeds are sufficient to start the rotor spinning, typically around 10 km/h. For safety, turbines are designed to shut down if wind speeds become excessively high, usually over 90 km/h. The electricity generated is often fed into the electrical grid, supplying power to homes and businesses. Large collections of wind turbines are known as wind farms.
