Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric-key block cipher published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1977. DES is based on the Feistel cipher structure and uses a 56-bit key to encrypt and decrypt data. DES was the first widely adopted encryption algorithm for commercial applications and was used to protect sensitive data in a variety of applications, including financial transactions, electronic mail, and military communications.
