Cryptocurrency, at its most fundamental, is a type of digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on blockchain technology—a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers. A defining feature of cryptocurrencies is that they are generally not issued by any central authority, rendering them theoretically immune to government interference or manipulation. This novel approach to currency and transactions opens up a world of possibilities, from faster and cheaper international money transfers to new forms of investment and financial applications. The underlying blockchain technology also has potential applications far beyond just currency, in areas like supply chain management, voting systems, and digital identity.
