The ancient Egyptians developed a complex writing system that used a combination of logographic, alphabetic, and syllabic signs. This intricate system is known as hieroglyphs and was used for over 3,000 years to record everything from religious texts to royal decrees.
Types of Hieroglyphs
There are three main types of hieroglyphs:

Logographic: These signs represent entire words or concepts. For example, the hieroglyph for "king" is a picture of a crown.

Alphabetic: These signs represent individual sounds. For example, the hieroglyph for the sound "a" is a picture of an eagle.

Syllabic: These signs represent combinations of sounds. For example, the hieroglyph for the syllable "ba" is a picture of a ram.
Hieroglyphs could be written in both horizontal and vertical rows, and they could be read from left to right or from right to left. The direction of writing was determined by the context in which the hieroglyphs were used.
The Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone is a fragment of a stele that was inscribed with the same text in three different scripts: hieroglyphics, demotic, and Greek. This stone was discovered in 1799 and it played a crucial role in the decipherment of hieroglyphs.
