NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a political and military alliance of countries from North America and Europe. It was established in the aftermath of World War II to prevent another such conflict. NATO’s mission is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. NATO countries are committed to mutual defense, meaning that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. The organization is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium.
What is NATO’s History?
NATO was founded on April 4, 1949, with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty by 12 countries: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Greece and Turkey joined in 1952, followed by West Germany in 1955 and Spain in 1982. The Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland joined in 1999, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia joined in 2004, Albania and Croatia joined in 2009, and Montenegro joined in 2017. North Macedonia joined in 2020.

NATO’s main purpose is to protect its members from attack. The organization does this by maintaining a system of collective security, which means that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
