The Critical Role of IT Support Staff in Healthcare

This exciting course introduces you to the various roles in IT support common in healthcare. IT support staff play critical roles in clinics, hospitals, and emergency rooms, as well as skilled nursing facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, virtual care settings, and even patients' homes. You'll learn about the unique challenges and rewards of working in Health IT and hear from IT support staff at Johns Hopkins about their experiences.

Health Information Technology Fundamentals

In this course, you will get an overview of the health IT ecosystem, with a focus on electronic health records (EHRs). We'll cover the factors that led to the shift from paper to digital records, the major vendors, and the features of EHRs, such as computerized provider order entry, clinical decision support, documentation capabilities, and medication reconciliation. We'll also discuss the role of EHRs throughout the patient journey, from scheduling to inpatient admissions.

Operations and Patient Safety for Healthcare IT Staff

Now that you've been introduced to Health IT and the role of EHRs, we'll focus on other technologies that play a role in maintaining ongoing operations in healthcare. Telemedicine, patient portals, barcode scanners, printers, and medical devices are just some of the technologies that impact providers and patients. As an IT support specialist, you’ll be asked to troubleshoot issues with a wide variety of tools.
