Greening the Economy

Sustainable Cities and Communities,

How can we shape our urban development towards sustainable and prosperous futures? This course explores sustainable cities as engines for greening the economy in Europe and around the world. We place cities in the context of sustainable urban transformation and climate change. We connect the key trends of urbanization, decarbonisation and sustainability. We examine how visions, experiments and innovations can transform urban areas. And we look at practices (what is happening in cities at present) and opportunities (what are the possibilities for cities going forwards into the future). This course was launched in January 2016, and it was updated in September 2021 with new podcasts, films and publications. The course is produced by Lund University in cooperation with WWF and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability who work with creating sustainable cities. The course features researchers, practitioners and entrepreneurs from a range organisations.

sustainable cities

Great overview of sustainable cities with many examples of actions happening in cities all around the world.

The videos and readings showcased interesting work and gave insights into actual groups and organizations taking action on sustainable cities.

Great introduction to the concept / practical aspects of sustainable cities!

Greening the Economy: Sustainable Cities has been truly an eye-opening educational experience for me as a graduate architect and citizen of Mother Earth.

Ιt was a very interesting course. You will learn many things in an accesible way ,especially through videos. It is not necessary to have much knowledge on this subject ,to create a general point of view for sustainable cities and to become more sensitive on this matter.

This class was a GREAT introduction to the world of sustainable cities and taught me a lot about how to work to create climate sustainable cities.

Many cities Government in Indonesia is starting develop their cities with adopting smart sustainable cities and ICT.

with some famous NGO participated in,like WWF,, the class content gets more colorful.the overall view of sustainable cities really impressed me...I would like to share the course to my friends Great course!

For those who wish to know the base of sustainable cities and how to make them reality in the future, this is the best course to lookout for.

In 5 weeks you have time to cover in details all the aspects of sustainable cities: energy, transport, waste, building, sharing economy.

This is an ok introductory course, a compilation of concepts, related to sustainable cities.

- Sebastian learned many things about sustainable cities Overall good course (the first MOOC I ever took, so inexperienced in grading these courses), but some areas of improvement remain.I would however suggest less redundancy.

Very interesting and thank you for clearly organizing and the topics in which sustainable cities is being studied.

Good coarse The course was interisting and ideal if it's your first approach with the topic of sustainable cities.

climate change

This course was a very interesting introduction into what steps cities are and must be taking to tackle climate change.

A really helpful and informative course GREAT COURSE, essential for these moments of climate change Its an okey course, I think it doesnt go deep enough in topics and its more like a pinch of everything.

The videos seemed loosely tied around a common subject, but it might as well have been a YouTube playlist on overall concepts of cities needing to be aware of climate change.

Especially after the results of the US Election, which will put action on climate change in jeopardy, I think it's important to be as educated as possible about sustainability challenges and how we can meet them without the help of our President.

I wish it had been a bit more current since we know how quickly things change with climate change.

I also felt like some of this information was out of date, given how much more we know about climate change and adaptation/mitigation since many of the course materials were written.

Also, the academic is wonderful and bring up the problems in order to inspire us to get the solutions I took this course because I wanted to elevate the thinking and opinions I had on climate change and what we can do about it.

I see how they are tied together now and I see how collaboration is the only way we will mitigate climate change and its effects on humanity.

In many places people rarely think of the climate change, CO2 footprint and how it impacts the nature.

The course showed just how scientists, universities and ordinary caring people try to address the climate change in cities, where the most effect on nature takes place.

They give you a professional overall vision of how we (academia, politicians, enterpreneurs and citizens) should act in order to both adapt and mitigate climate change.

Given this, it would have been better to see more what cities in Asia and Africa are doing in terms of tackling climate change and moving towards a sustainable society.

Helped me get an perspective on how important it is for us to work together globally for climate change mitigation and creation of equitable and sustainable cities.

I know we have a lot to do to make this planet carbon neutral but I think that people, especially in this bad time caused by Covid-19, will have a major interest to tackle climate change.

(Robert Stein, AICP) Such a good course with so much resources and content.

Agree that Sweden has taken so much effort to bring the city to what it is now.

So I think video helps a lot to reduce entire amount of reading into summary in speech.Overall it was a superb experience.Thank you team, Instructors, Teachers and those who have put up so much hard work in making this course.

Thank you so much, it has been a great course, I'm currently an architecture student in Mexico and this is so useful to me.

cities around the world

I would recommend this course for those wanting to get an understanding of projects going on in different cities around the world that can be inspiring.

The assignment really makes you reflect about what is your city making for sustainability and also is inspiring to know what other cities around the world are doing for it.

The course content were precise, very relatable and made me see how several cities around the world were developing towards green sustainability.

Great examples of how sustainable urban transformation is being used in cities around the world, and how integrating sustainable development into urban development practice can take place.

It helps you realize both the big efforts being made within cities around the world to tackle climate change, and the challenges ahead to successfully achieve the goals proposed by cities, agencies, etc.

case studies

It would also have been interesting to hear about more projects outside of Scandinavia and Northern Europe, as many of the case studies seemed to focus on these areas.

Though case studies were very well researched and described, the course could've been more specific towards the methodologies used to achieve sustainability goals like engineering solutions, managerial actions, economic influences, etc.

I think there is alot of interesting ideas, case studies and information.

A lot of interesting case studies and general information on worldwide innovations regarding sustainability.

This course explained sustainability and urban planning not just by theory but by using case studies and examples.

It is a good course which includes interesting cities' case studies.

Some topics were too short (I would want to learn more about them rather than have a short mention or a basic video introduction) and unnecessary (such as the short videos/"case studies").

Thank you for this program. The course was very interesting as it offered me the opportunity to learn new things. My horizon has increased tremendously.

Learnt many new things.

It was great learning new things and developing knowledge.

I did learn new things which prompts me to do more independent study at least.

That was my first encounter with sustainability in cities and as well as learning new things, I could understand a framework of studies about sustainability.

each week

The structure of a short quiz after each week encouraged me to take detailed notes on the readings and lectures, and I enjoyed conducting my own research for the coursework.

All the information was very clear, interesting and useful, the practical examples in each week were very enlightening and inspirational.

It is a good introductory course, but I think it should go deeper each week content.

one star for each week.

felt like

However I felt like some of the videos (particularly the 1 minute videos) did not provide much real information.

Good resources and well-structured course, really felt like a very comprehensive coverage of the topic.

Also, I appreciate the course is provided by a Swedish university but it would definitely benefit from more examples from outside Scandinavia – at times, it felt like I was watching tourism videos of some of the most affluent cities in the world!Still, all things considered, it's a thought-provoking course that provides a good introduction to the area.

And sometimes it felt like I was watching a big commercial block to promote certain projects.
