This family is great because it’s one of the most popular families that is eaten all over the world. It encompasses potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants among many other vegetables that have been cultivated for thousands of years.

We will focus on potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. We’ll explore what their habits and required growing conditions are, the best time to harvest these vegetables, as well as some problems and how to avoid them.

In addition, I will share some special techniques for maximum production. For example, what is the best way to prune tomatoes, and which suckers do you prune versus letting them go? If pruning is required, I discuss what gets pruned and when to prune. Learn about some problems with tomatoes and what cultural practices are best employed to help prevent these problems and still get maximum production.

Learn all about the various type of peppers, when to plant them, what are the minimum temperatures they tolerate and how they are otherwise relatively easy to grow.

For eggplants, I reveal what temperature requirements are essential for fruit production, when to fertilize and how to keep them producing until the end of the season.

Growing potatoes

I will discuss the growing conditions of potatoes, how to prepare seed potatoes and get them ready for planting. How to properly take care of them while growing to get the best production and to avoid sun exposure.

Read more

In this section I will discuss their growing requirements, proper temperatures and how to protect them from temperature fluctuations. I will explain the various types of tomatoes and their growing conditions and how to properly plant them for best production. Which varieties are best for containers and what to expect in terms of growth?

You will have the opportunity to see how tomatoes are pruned and learn what to leave behind in this important step to get the best production possible.

The supporting document covers part 1 and 2 of the lecture.

I explain how to prune larger tomato plants and easily keep them under control.

You will learn the advantages and differences between heirlooms vs hybrids. How to choose between them and grow some of each if you have enough space for both types.

Look at certain diseases and how to recognize them as well as how to prevent them or at least lessen their impact. What cultural practices work best for better production and how much watering should be done on a weekly basis.

What are the most common insects that attack tomatoes and how to control these pest and what impact if any it will do to the plants.

Seedling- how old should these be before transplanting, hardening off before fully planting them outdoors. This also applies for peppers and eggplants.

Fertilization is very important as well as when to fertilize in order to allow the plant to go into production mode versus just allow the plant to just keep growing. This applies to the whole family.

In this section I will discuss temperature requirements for growing peppers, their fertilization requirements, when to harvest them based on your taste, needs, and spacing.

Peppers come in all types, colors, heat intensity, flavors and sizes. We will learn about the heat units that are associated with the hot peppers. This will help you decide what are the best varieties to grow. Which peppers are the hottest versus the sweet peppers?

Some of the diseases that peppers are prone to and how to prevent them. What insects may attack them and their control.

Eggplants need specific temperature requirements to fully develop. I will discuss these and how to ensure you get a full crop. What happens if your timing is off? Some techniques to help the soil warm up sooner.

How much fertilization these plants need and when to fertilize. Their spacing needs as well as how to increase production at the end of the season. The insects that attack them and how to best control them.
