It is a self contained section of the classroom in which students engage in independent and self directed learning activities. These centres allow easy access to a variety of learning materials in an interesting and productive manner. Centres are designed to enhance the learning of concepts, skills, themes or topics.
Learning centres are designed in accordance with the curriculum requirements of that grade. In pre primary classrooms, lessons are designed to make children :
Curious
Active
playful
imaginative
creative
independent
Whereas in primary grades, lessons are planned to focus and develop skills in:
Classroom Management
Literacy Concepts
Numeracy Concepts
Social Sciences
Technical knowledge
Creative Art
Physical Well being
Therefore, these learning centres are created keeping in mind the requirements of children in the classroom for that particular grade.
There are various advantages of creating these learning centres. Discipline problems are reduced because groups are limited to a number which can reasonably function in each area. Classroom management is easier since children are in the area of their choice and interest. Children are engaged in hands-on activities as they explore and experiment by themselves.

In this setup, I have created a forest theme. This set up can be used when you are narrating a story -
"A Visit to a forest".
In the story, children go for a visit to a forest & explore various kinds of animals, a treehouse, barn etc. After you have narrated the story, they can go to the exploration corner/centre and play with animals, monkey tree, log house and a forest man.
I have also used different figurines of animals and children to make the setup more interesting for the children.
You can add more resources and ask your children to bring animals and trees figurines from home to add to this setup.

Here I have tried to create a Halloween set up using resources like a reading book, character paper stick puppets, hand puppet and other decorations like a halloween basket, candies & a reading picture book.
Children love making these paper stick puppets, Jack-O-Lantern Jars, lighted pumpkins and other halloween scary masks.
Dramatic Play Corner
They can also pretend to be a boy/ girl who goes for "Trick or Treat" in his neighbourhood & meet his neighbours, collects treats & finally meets his dad.
This becomes a fun activity and helps in bringing out their creativity.
This set up displays various construction equipments and their uses.
You can set up these in a study corner when doing theme, " Construction Vehicles or Community helpers" in your class. In theme - "Community helper" you are displaying equipments used by a Construction worker in the field.
Children will learn names of different types of Heavy Construction Equipment, for example
Bulldozers
Dragline Excavator
Trenchers
Loaders
Tower Cranes
Pavers
Dump Trucks
Wheel Tractor Scraper
Graders
Children can a better understanding of these equipments by exploring & playing with the above set of tools.
They can also do a role play with their friends pretending to be a Construction Worker working at a construction site.
