Lithography is a printing technique that uses a flat stone or metal plate to transfer an image onto paper. The stone or plate is first coated with a light-sensitive chemical, and then an image is drawn onto the surface using a greasy crayon or ink. The stone or plate is then exposed to light, which hardens the areas that have been drawn on. The stone or plate is then washed with water, which removes the unhardened areas. The remaining hardened areas are then inked, and the ink is transferred to paper.
History of Lithography
Lithography was invented in 1796 by Alois Senefelder, a German playwright. Senefelder was looking for a cheap and easy way to print his plays, and he experimented with using a flat stone to transfer an image onto paper. Senefelder's invention was initially used for printing maps and posters, but it soon became popular for printing fine art. In the 19th century, lithography was used by artists such as Francisco Goya, Édouard Manet, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
