Email Routing

May 11, 2024 3 minute read

Email routing is the process of delivering emails from one email server to another. It is a complex process that involves multiple steps and components. Email routing is essential for the smooth functioning of the Internet and the delivery of emails to their intended recipients.

Email Routing Components

The main components of email routing are:

  • Mail Transfer Agents (MTAs): MTAs are responsible for transferring emails between email servers. They use the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to send and receive emails.
  • Message Delivery Agents (MDAs): MDAs are responsible for delivering emails to the recipient's mailbox. They use the Post Office Protocol (POP) or the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to retrieve emails from the MTA.
  • Mail Exchangers (MXs): MXs are DNS records that specify which email server is responsible for receiving emails for a particular domain.

Email Routing Process

The email routing process begins when an email client sends an email to an MTA. The MTA then looks up the MX record for the recipient's domain to determine which email server is responsible for receiving emails for that domain. The MTA then sends the email to the recipient's email server.
