Internet Protocol version 6, or IPv6, represents the latest evolution of the core protocol that governs how devices communicate across the internet and other networks. At its most fundamental level, IPv6 provides the unique numerical labels, known as IP addresses, that allow your computer, smartphone, and countless other devices to find and exchange information with each other. It was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to address the limitations of its predecessor, IPv4, primarily the rapidly depleting pool of available IPv4 addresses.
