Menopause is a natural stage in a woman's life that marks the end of her reproductive years. It occurs when the ovaries stop producing eggs and the levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone decline. Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier or later.
Causes of Menopause
The primary cause of menopause is the depletion of ovarian follicles, which are the structures in the ovaries that contain eggs. As a woman ages, her ovaries gradually lose follicles, and the production of estrogen and progesterone declines. This decline in hormone levels triggers the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and irregular periods.
