The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement that began in the 16th century in Europe. It led to the establishment of Protestantism, a new branch of Christianity that broke away from the Catholic Church. The Reformation was sparked by the teachings of Martin Luther, a German theologian who challenged the authority of the Pope and the Catholic Church. Luther's ideas quickly spread throughout Europe, and soon other reformers, such as John Calvin and Andreas Karlstadt, emerged to lead the movement.

Causes of the Reformation

There were a number of factors that contributed to the Protestant Reformation. One factor was the growing dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church. Many people felt that the Church was corrupt and that its leaders were more interested in power and money than in serving the needs of the faithful. Another factor was the rise of humanism, a new intellectual movement that emphasized the importance of human reason and experience. Humanists were critical of the Church's reliance on tradition and authority, and they argued that people should be free to interpret the Bible for themselves.
