Introductory Biology

Thomas Amann

This course will provide students with a basic understanding of an introductory level biology experience. It will contain video lectures and you will be provided with fill-in lecture notes, as well as end of section quizzes. It is up to you how you would like to experience this course, fast-paced for upcoming test preparation -or more slow-paced for learners that want to take their time. Either way, you'll be building a foundation for further biology topics if you choose to continue your adventure.

The course will cover most major aspects of a biology experience in high school or introductory college course. However, It can be useful to students (at any level) looking for additional help or prep in biology topics. The information presented will help you fill your personal science skill set and be applicable to the natural world around you. We will work all the way through what is called "the central dogma of biology", an informational pathway from DNA to molecular products. Don't worry, it will go step by step.

I have 25 years of experience teaching biology and chemistry at both the high school and collegiate level.  The course will be taught with an appreciation for life's intricate processes and applications to the real world will be integrated into lectures (when possible.)

Hopefully, you will complete the course with a better understanding of how cells work and are a key component and building block of the natural world.

Learning objective

Understand more about the natural world around you, gain an appreciation for the complexities of life and score higher on exams!

Syllabus

Students will gain an understanding of life and what an organism does to classify it as being "alive." Students will also learn a major theme in biology called "homeostasis."

This is the first lecture of our course. It will define biology is and explain the characteristics of life. Download the fill-in notes to accompany the lecture if you are looking to be active during the video. By writing down information, you will incorporate more neurons as you process and organize new ideas. You will be able to recall more than just listening/watching alone. Because of Udemy time limits on videos, I will break lectures into multiple parts (when necessary.)

This is part 2 of the first lecture.

Homeostasis
Homeostasis (Part 2): Feedback Loops

This is a quick 5-question quiz to check if you are picking up pertinent information as you go through our lectures.

Understand the chemical building blocks that build and allow cells to have structure and function.

This 4-part lecture will cover the chemistry of biology. Part 1 will go over the structure of atoms, subatomic particles, the periodic table and isotopes.

Part 2 will explain bonding and ion formation.

Part 3 explains the formation of the ionic bond and properties of ionic compounds.

Part 4 explains covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding.

Quiz: Chemistry of Biology

This lecture will explain water's integral connections to life.

Quiz: Water's Biological Importance

This multi-part lecture will explain the structure and functions of the building blocks of living matter. It will also explain the mechanism of building polymer from monomers.

Biomolecules: Carbohydrates
Biomolecules - Lipids
Biomolecules - Proteins (Part 1)
Biomolecules - Proteins (Part 2)
Biomolecules - Nucleic Acids
Quiz: Biomolecules
Students will learn about the basic building block of organisms. The cell membrane gets its own separate lecture due to its importance.
The Cell (Part 1): Cellular Basics
The Cell (Part 2): Membranes, Surface Area to Volume ratio, nuclei, DNA
The Cell (Part 3): The Endomembrane System
The Cell (Part 4): Additional Organelles
The Cell (Part 5): Cytoskeleton, Intracellular Junctions
Quiz: The Cell
The Cell Membrane
Cell Membranes (Part 2): Concentration Gradients, Permeability, Tonicity
Cell Membranes (Part 3): Passive/Active Transport, Bulk Transport
Quiz: Cell Membranes
Cell Reproduction
The Cell Cycle and Mitosis (Part 1): The Cell Cycle
The Cell Cycle and Mitosis (Part 2): Stages of Mitosis
The Cell Cycle and Mitosis (Part 3): Cytokinesis and Binary Fission
Quiz: Mitosis
Meiosis (Part 1): Overview
Meiosis (Part 2): Stages of Meiosis
Meiosis (Part 3): Meiosis vs. Mitosis and Genetic Implications
Meiosis (Part 4): Meiotic Errors
Quiz: Meiosis
Understand the genetic material of life: How organisms convert the "code of life" into molecules that are essential for every living thing.

This lecture will explain how DNA entered the scientific realm as the genetic material. Several famous experiments will be explained as well as the connection to figuring out DNA's structure. In parts 2 and 3, DNA replication will be explained.

DNA (Part 2): DNA Structure
DNA (Part 3): DNA Replication
Quiz: DNA
DNA to Protein (Part 1): "The Central Dogma of Biology" and messenger RNA
DNA to Protein (Part 2): Transcription
DNA to Protein (Part 3): Translation
Quiz: DNA to Protein
