Can a white wine be made from red grapes?  Find out the answer by watching this video.  At the same time, you will learn the key difference between making white wines and making red wines.

In this over-the-shoulder video, a typical tasting note is reverse engineered in order to link the specific winemaking process - the cause - with the aromas and flavours produced - the effect.

Section 2

Tasting and describing wine

See, swirl, sip and ..........  Can you guess other 4 words staring with the letter 's' that complete the process for tasting wine?  Watch this lecture to find out what they are and how using the 7 S's approach can improve the full sensory experience when tasting wine.

What should we be paying attention to when looking at a wine's appearance? What can the colour tell us about the age of a wine?  What does the colour intensity of a wine indicate about the wine's flavour? And, why might a little cloudiness in wine be a good thing?  Watch here to find out.

Primary, secondary and tertiary aromas are explained using concrete examples.  Understanding this key concept will firmly link the aromas and flavours in your glass to their origins and sets the stage for the overall concept of 'Wine in 9'.

What happens to us when we remove the sense of sight from the winetasting process.  Learn more here about 'the colour of aromas'.

The key to remembering is to never forget.  Writing tasting notes is a great way to anchor those moments of recognition of a particular aroma or flavour so that you recall them more easily later.  Learn what things to focus on as you go through an examination of a wine's appearance, nose, palate and your personal, overall impressions.

So often with wine, the tactile sensation or the 'sense of touch' is overlooked.  Here we focus on how to describe a wine's textures.  This video will help you add depth to your wine descriptions.

Have you ever felt as if you cannot detect anything specific in your glass of wine?  Try this simple technique to train your palate and to entertain your friends at your next wine tasting.  This technique was the one that was taught to me at university during my winemaking training.

Section 3
Introduction to the "Wine in 9" grid

This second of nine categories in the 'Wine in 9' grid focusses on process-driven sparkling wine.  While it is true that putting the bubbles into your bubbly is itself a process, the specific method for doing this is all-important.   Learn why choosing a wine with the phrase "Fermented in this Bottle" is often to be preferred to one that only says "Bottle-fermented".

This third of nine category, terroir-driven sparkling wine, introduces the concept of matching the grape variety to the sub-region in Champagne.  Be sure to look at the pdf for examples of an exciting and more affordable type of Champagne that is becoming more and more popular.

A great way to buy wine with confidence is to learn which countries specialize in the making of a single variety.  Please find go to the pdf to see some of the rising stars in the wine world as countries claim certain varieties as their own.

Learn how the winemaking process itself contributes to the essential character of still wine in this video.  This category of wine in the Wine in 9 grid focuses on how we humans get to imprint a distinctive character on the wine based on which process is applied.

Choosing which way to grow your grapes and make your sweet wine will have a significant and highly-specific impact on the final wine.  Learn which of the processes a winemaker would choose in order to impart the flavours of either grapefruit, raisins or dried apricots to their still, sweet wines.

How does terroir play a part in the making of fine Burgundy and Bordeaux wines?  Learn more about the 'sense of place' connected to the wines from these two extremely influential French regions and how this understanding can help guide your wine purchases.

This last cell in the Wine in 9 grid is occupied by only a handful of wines which include single-vineyard Ports.  Still however, the imprint of the sense of place on the wine is unmistakable, and the good news is that many of these wines will continue to showcase their sense of place over many decades of bottle ageing.

Section 7
Wine and food pairing principles

To what extent are we pre-programmed to like certain types of wines?  Learn about the fascinating link between our physiology and taste preferences when it comes to wine.  Such an understanding has the knock-on effect of forever changing how you view food and wine pairing.

Why do we sometimes see warnings on some wine labels regarding the use of fish, eggs, nuts and milk in the making of wine?  What makes a wine suitable for vegans and for vegetarians?  And why might the terms "Unfined and Unfiltered" indicate a higher level of wine quality? Watch here to find out more.

Take the mystery out of buying wine with these online and offline choices.  Be sure to tap into the vast sums of knowledge held by your local wine professionals.
