Get Wine-Smart

You can find a million books and articles, thousands of websites, and hundreds of courses on the topic of wine…and all promise to "give you a set of new skills" or "get you tasting like a wine expert" or "prepare you for the “rigors” of wine tasting" or even to train you to do a proper "sensory evaluation"…

Um…what? Taste wine like an expert? Learn how to do a proper sensory evaluation? Who the hell cares about that. What about us real people? I'm not trying to be a professional wine judge, nor a snobby wine critic, or even a master sommelier, whatever the hell that is. I just want to enjoy wine to the fullest, and be able to walk the walk, and talk the talk of wine, at least to know enough to totally diss those country-clubber types. I just want to drink this stuff and not look like a goober doing it. And I want to do it right now.

That's what Professor Boyer and this course is all about. Real talk to real people about the real deal of this most awesome beverage. This is a truly practical and tactical introduction to the enjoying and understanding wine. Wine is the beverage of moderation, of education, of socialization, and of civilization—and that is no exaggeration. A radical move from beer and hard spirits to wine is underway here in the US, and is creating a younger generation of drinkers that enjoy wine as part of their diet, social interactions, and lifestyles. And they are thirsty for the wine knowledge. Stop dipping your toe in the water, let's get wet…with wine.

geography of wine

I am also in the Geography of wine class at VT as well and this gave more of a background into wine.

Taking Geography of wine this semester it was nice to have a source dedicated to Boyer on camera.

I am enrolled in an online version of Geography of Wine so having this lecture series was essentially equivalent to having an actual course taught by Professor Boyer.

I think this course was one of the most valuable aspects of Geography of Wine.

I am currently taking the course, Geography of Wine, taught by Professor Boyer, and I found this Udemy video class to be the best way I've learned about wine yet.

This was an extremely helpful aid to my geography of wine course!

I thought that this course was very helpful to better learn about the geography of wine.

I'm very glad I decided to take this course during the Geography of Wine course because if gave me a solid foundation on which I continued to build knowledge on throughout the semester.

I found this class to be a very well-rounded introduction to wine and the geography of wine.

I’d recommend it to anyone taking the Geography of Wine class.

This was a really cool supplement to our geography of wine class at tech.

These videos definitely helped for geography of wine and should be watched since you can see what Boyer is talking about.

However, I am already in a course enrolled by J. Boyer, Geography of Wine.

Overall, this component has been a great part of the Geography of Wine course.

highly recommend

Thank you Boyer for an awesome course at a cheap price and i highly recommend you encourage/ make this course required as points for this class in the future Boyer is always great about putting things into relatable contexts for the inexperienced students, and this wine course is no exception.

Highly recommended.

Overall, I highly recommend this course; it was entertaining, not overly time consuming, and very informative.

I highly recommend this course and will always recommend friends and family to study from Dr. Boyer's course.

Highly recommended!

Highly recommend this class to all!

I would highly recommend this class to anyone who has the slightest interest in wine because this beverage really is so complex with a pretty rich history if you want to take it further.

The quality of these videos were amazing and I would highly recommend this course.

I would highly recommend this course to anyone even remotely interested in wine, beginners and seasoned drinkers alike!

Highly recommended for the beginner.

If you have never been into wine but you really want a quick and fun way to learn about it, I would highly recommend this course because it will introduce you to many aspects of wine and it will prepare you on how to really get into wine.

I highly recommend this course if you are interested in wine!

I highly recommend this class to anyone who is trying to get a start on becoming a wine drinker!!!!

I would highly recommend to other non wine drinkers It was a very entertaining and enlightening course that really made me appreciate wine a lot more.

vintage cellar

I liked that some of the videos were filmed at a wine store (Vintage Cellar), and it was great to see Randall participating as well (he could have had more participation but I know time is limited).

One of the things it did best was the amount of knowledge from John Boyer and the employee at the Vintage Cellar for most of the videos.

Professor Boyer was always prepared for the lectures, and I really enjoyed how he broadcasted a lot of them from the Vintage Cellar.

I did like that Boyer made the majority of his videos in the Vintage Cellar and physical emerged himself into the wine world.

When he talked about different wines, he was actually at the Vintage Cellar so I felt like he was really engaged in the teaching.

Was well sectioned in its parts and was nice to have the Vintage Cellar worker give his own input as well.

Shooting the lectures on site at the Vintage Cellar was a great idea.

The production quality was very good, and the video was shot mainly at a cool wine store called Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA All of these videos were very informational and entertaining.

I also liked how he used The Vintage Cellar as the setting.

These courses are filmed in a local Virginia wine shop, The Vintage Cellar, and many offer hands-on activities to learn about wine.

The production quality is pretty good, I got excited when I saw that the episodes were taking place in the Vintage Cellar!

I also really enjoyed how he uses so many examples and does the shows for the Vintage Cellar.

The setting in The Vintage Cellar makes it all the more enjoyable to watch since the live course includes tastings at the Vintage Cellar.

Being filmed in a wine distributor (Vintage Cellar) was a great call.

at virginia tech

I really enjoyed taking Get Wine-Smart as part of an assignment for GEOG 4054: Geography of Wine at Virginia Tech.

I highly recommend this, not only for those in John Boyer's class at Virginia Tech, but for anyone who wants to learn the basics of being a part of this culture.

I am a student at Virginia Tech taking his course Geography of Wine so these videos were offered as an extra way to get points.

Having taken your online world regions course at Virginia Tech as well I found that these videos shared a similar style in presenting the information for any given section.

I am took this course as part of Professor Boyer's Geography of Wine course at Virginia Tech and overall I feel like the objective of the course was achieved.

It was my favorite learning tool of Boyer's Geography of Wine class at Virginia Tech.

I am a student at Virginia Tech taking the wine course taught by him.

This course was great prep for the Geography of Wine course I am currently taking at Virginia Tech with John Boyer.

As a male college student at Virginia Tech, I have never considered drinking wine at all.

He is a highly-demanded professor at Virginia Tech with class sizes in the thousands; you would be missing a great opportunity by passing up this course - an opportunity to not only experience wine, but also to experience lectures with one of the most passionate educators of our generation.

I like the format of the lessons, especially when combined with Boyer’s ‘Geography of Wine’ class at Virginia Tech.

Geography of Wine is easily one of the best classes I have taken so far at Virginia Tech, and Dr. Boyer is one of the best professors I have had at Virginia Tech.

Boyer, is not only a great teacher at Virginia Tech, but has also opened my palate to tasting wines all over the world.

I have had the pleasure of being in Prof. Boyer's classes at Virginia Tech, and these videos he has made for this short course are more than enough to get anybody into and excited about wine!

drink this now

He does a great job of providing the basics that you need to know (if you want more, get a copy of his book, "Drink This Now!")

A lot of the topics are covered in drink this now as well but this helped re-enforce a lot of the topics and brought up some new topics as well.

These videos go along well with his book, Drink This Now!, and I thought that visibly seeing and hearing him talk about wine really helped me understand the tricks and hints of drinking and enjoying wine.

It does seem to be a bit repetitive at times, especially if you have done any work with the Drink This Now textbook, but in the end it drives home the principles well.

I learned a lot and it went along nicely with the readings from Drink This Now.

It was a great jumpstart into wine knowledge and supplements Boyer's book, "Drink this Now".

This course complements his book, Drink This Now!

Drink This Now!

follows along great with his book Drink this now!

red and white wines

For example, when talking about red and white wines, the general descriptors were presented first.

My favorite videos were on the red and white wines because I learned about flavors, smells, and regions, which is really helpful when I go to my local wine stores.

Beginning this course, I knew virtually nothing more than the simple classification of red and white wines.

When i started this course I had only knew there were red and white wines.

same time

Very informative, yet entertaining at the same time.

He still does a great job keeping your attention and ensuring that you are learning at the same time.

He is entertaining and a great teacher at the same time.

The professor is very engaging and makes the course a lot of fun and easy to get through while learning a bunch at the same time.

I was able to learn so much from the lecture and could take great notes at the same time.

Professor Boyer is an excellent teacher, especially because you can tell he is an experienced wine drinker but at the same time not a snob.

The class structure is pretty simple but at the same time effective.

I felt like it was pretty easy to learn the basics AND have fun at the same time.

John Boyer's enthusiasm and great knowledge of wine makes the course fun and educational at the same time.

go back

Sometimes I wanted to go back and listen to just one thing but I'd have to reload most of the video and try to remember where I heard it.

Just do me a favor: when you're done with the class, go back to the beginning and watch them all again in half-time.

In order to take notes of the lecture or my own wine, I was able to pause the video to go back and re-watch it.

Being from California and growing up in wine country, I felt I should learn a little more about wine in general and I think this course achieved the type of information I needed to be able to go back home and go to wine tastings and know what these wine enthusiasts are actually talking about.

Having lectures online was really helpful because I was able to go back and rewind to the parts I did not fully understand.

I like the layout of the videos because it makes it easy to keep all of the thought together as well as stop and not feel like you have to go back and rewatch lessons in order to move on to the next lesson.

The video lectures were helpful because it allowed me to pause and or go back and review a section.

I hope to keep my log in and be able to go back and review lectures after graduation!

I liked being able to go back and re-watch portions of the videos that I misunderstood or portions of the videos that were dense with information.

wine library tv

I am a very visual learner, and being in the online section of his Geography of Wine class, this really helps to better understand the points he's trying to get across in his book and the descriptions given by Gary Vaynerchuk in the Wine Library TV videos.

He outlined things that were talked about from Wine Library TV but explained it more in depth.

Although both wine library tv with Gary Vaynerchuck and this course both review wine, the difference in presentation couldn't be more different.

I found Udemy, along with the zraly book, Wine Library TV, the live lectures, and weekly quizzes to be redundant and overkill.

However, I think these videos were way more interesting than Wine Library TV.

quite a bit

The only problem I had with this class is I had quite a bit of trouble with the video lectures playing.

I already knew quite a bit about wine and I still managed to learn a few things and clarify many others.

Professor Boyer is witty and funny and has quite a bit of knowledge and first-hand experience to share.

I am just getting into wine since I'm only 21, and I found this a great resource and learned quite a bit.
