Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that has been circulating in the Americas, Africa, and Asia since the mid-20th century. It is closely related to other flaviviruses, such as dengue virus, yellow fever virus, and West Nile virus. Zika virus infection is typically asymptomatic, but it can sometimes cause mild symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. In some cases, Zika virus infection can lead to more serious complications, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, microcephaly, and other neurological disorders.
History and Transmission
Zika virus was first isolated in 1947 from a rhesus monkey in the Zika Forest of Uganda. The virus was subsequently identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and Tanzania. Zika virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, particularly the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The virus can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, organ transplants, and sexual contact.
