Steel is a versatile material used in construction, manufacturing, transportation, and packaging. It is strong and durable and can be easily formed into a variety of shapes. Manufacturers can alloy steel with other elements to create specific properties for different industrial applications.

What is Steel?

Steel is primarily iron that contains a certain carbon content. Most types of steel contain between 0.05% to 2.1% carbon. However, some types of steel may have a higher or lower carbon content. Steel also includes small amounts of manganese, sulfur, silicon, and sometimes other elements.

Iron is a naturally occurring element, but steel is not; steel is an alloy, a mixture of elements.

Types of Steel

There are different types of steel, each with unique properties suitable for specific applications. Some of the major types of steel include:

  • Carbon Steel: The most common type of steel, carbon steel is strong and relatively inexpensive. It is used in a wide range of applications, including construction, automotive, and manufacturing.
  • Alloy Steel: Made by adding specific elements to carbon steel, alloy steel has enhanced properties, such as increased strength, corrosion resistance, or high-temperature strength.
  • Stainless Steel: A corrosion-resistant steel, stainless steel is used in applications where resistance to rust and corrosion is crucial, such as in food processing and medical equipment.
  • Tool Steel: Made from high-carbon steel and alloyed with elements like chromium and vanadium, tool steel is used to make cutting tools, dies, and other tools.
  • Structural Steel: Designed for use in construction, structural steel is strong and durable. It is used in buildings, bridges, and other structures.
