Roman art is the visual arts produced in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. It encompasses a wide range of forms, including sculpture, painting, mosaics, architecture, and metalwork. Roman art was heavily influenced by Greek art, but it also developed its own unique style and iconography.
History of Roman Art
The earliest Roman art dates back to the 6th century BCE, and it was heavily influenced by Etruscan art. During the Roman Republic, Greek art became increasingly popular in Rome, and Roman artists began to adopt Greek styles and techniques. By the 1st century BCE, Roman art had developed its own distinct style, which was characterized by its realism, its use of perspective, and its emphasis on narrative.
Types of Roman Art
Roman art can be divided into two main categories: public art and private art. Public art was commissioned by the government and was used to decorate public buildings and spaces. Private art was commissioned by individuals and was used to decorate their homes and villas.
The most common types of public art were sculpture, painting, and mosaics. Sculpture was used to create statues of gods, emperors, and other important figures. Painting was used to decorate the walls of public buildings and temples. Mosaics were used to create floors and wall decorations.
The most common types of private art were painting, mosaics, and metalwork. Painting was used to decorate the walls of homes and villas. Mosaics were used to create floors and wall decorations. Metalwork was used to create a variety of objects, including jewelry, tableware, and weapons.
