Photovoltaics, often abbreviated as PV, is the science and technology of converting light, primarily sunlight, directly into electricity using semiconductor materials. This process, known as the photovoltaic effect, occurs when photons from sunlight strike a solar cell, exciting electrons and creating an electric current. It forms the bedrock of solar power, a rapidly growing renewable energy source. Understanding photovoltaics is key to grasping how we can harness the immense power of the sun to meet our energy needs sustainably.
