You have likely heard the frustrating phrase, “It’s Greek to me. ” I suggest that is because the traditional way of teaching New Testament Koine Greek is to emphasize rules of grammar. Now let me ask you. Is mastering rules of grammar the way children learn so quickly? Of course not. So, why should we impose grammar on adults?
You have likely heard the frustrating phrase, “It’s Greek to me. ” I suggest that is because the traditional way of teaching New Testament Koine Greek is to emphasize rules of grammar. Now let me ask you. Is mastering rules of grammar the way children learn so quickly? Of course not. So, why should we impose grammar on adults?
However, we are no longer children, so I have developed a method based on “patterns” in the language. How much easier is for us to remember a pattern rather than applying rules of grammar that are delivered to us in English. Of course, we must also memorize vocabulary, but I even have a comfortable way for you to learn Greek words. And finally, I teach you how to pronounce the Greek so you begin to think in the language rather than translating everything into English as the way to understand the Greek.
I trust you have taken the Beginner Greek course offered by BibleInteract and you are ready for the Intermediate program.
There are ten lessons and each one has significant teaching aids and opportunities for you to practice what you are learning. You can follow the video lesson with an outline of the instruction, and you are encouraged to take notes as you view the presentation. There is also a Study Guide that helps you review what you are learning.
Of course, there is vocabulary to learn in every lesson. However, I do not leave you completely with your own efforts, but I help you with this task of memorization. Finally, there will be a quiz at the end of each lesson, but the purpose is primarily a teaching technique. If you are struggling in any area, the quiz will help you recognize where you need to return and spend more time before advancing to the next lesson.
The final goal for the course is for you to be able to penetrate a deeper understanding of the text than a simple translation can offer. Don’t forget. All translations are interpretation. Furthermore, conveying a nuance of meaning in one language simply cannot be captured by a simple word or phrase in another language.
So, I send you best wishes for your desire to fully understand the Gospel of Christ that has come down to us in an ancient form of Koine Greek.
