What people are saying

business strategy

Michael Lenox of UVA’s Darden School of Business puts together a very basic business strategy course for students who have no experience in the field at all.

It's hard to find good intro courses on business strategy...but this was typical high University of Virginia / Coursera standard You have to see this video improve your skills about business strategies and read about it, its will helps you.

for beginner of Business Strategy, it's understandable.

It really helped me review the business strategy concepts.

case studies

The tools they provide really simplify business analysis and the case studies help a lot.

The end-of-session case studies are too complex for using the theories learned.

I hardly spent any time on discussion forums (other than posting my analysis of case studies) which would take additional time and so I may have lost my chances to learn from peers.

Very well presented lectures, uses same case studies as on campus and good use of discussion forum to simulate a case-study MBA course.

Nice case studies to train practice.

Excellent teaching and content This course puts our thoughts to work, simply explained and excellent case studies!

Generally that isn't an issue but can be a little challenging when the case studies and assignments are based on dated information.

We'll apply these tools in case studies of industry leaders Google, Redhook, Piaggio and Apple.

I particularly liked how the validity of theories was proven by their applications to specific case studies.

final project

There is a final project that gives the student an opportunity to apply the tools learned to a real business case.

The final project was a 1500-word "executive summary" of a strategic analysis of an organization of the each student's choice.

The is nothing abstract about the work you need to do to complete the final project.

All in all this is a great course and I enjoyed doing the final project as well.

Practical final project that has you perform a fundamental analysis of an existing firm's strategy.

I really liked having the opportunity to work on the final project to tie up all the concepts I learned.

I found the final project particularly worthwhile, and had fun using Coursera as my case study.

each week

Compared to the other courses I've taken, Foundations of Business Strategy proved much less time-consuming, with required readings limited to very short chapters from a forthcoming book by Lenox (and when I say "short", I mean it's more a pamphlet than a book, with chapters only a few pages long), and a business case each week.

The professor encouraged discussion of each case, both in small groups and in the discussion forum, and each week recorded a debriefing that made reference to students' comments in the forum; however, the only assignments that needed to ber turned in before the final project were (relatively easy) weekly quizzes that covered the lecture topics.

The instructor took time to explain the major questions each week as brought up in the forums which was very helpful.

peer review

people don't check assignments for peer to peer review This is very good course, brief content, what we practice in daily elaborated well so it can impletement for a great results.

Enjoyed this learning and the peer review of case studies.

The peer review has some issues, but overall the course is great.

The course content is very good and well presented BUT the course requirement of submitting 3 peer reviews is not practicable at all.

And on top of that, reading an entire plagiarized project and then flagging it doesn't count as a peer review and I still had to read another one to make up for it.

I actually had to read through seven projects before I could actually get three peer reviews done because the other four were plagiarized (so more than half given to me were plagiarized!).

It just felt unfair and I wish Coursera has some mechanism to flag the plagiarized ones like universities do before giving them out for peer review and thus wasting others' time.

competitive positioning

This is a concise course which had helped me consolidate my knowledge about business strategies and competitive positioning.

see how

Very clear ideia about strategy and it so well design (and taught) that you think you are dealing and learning a basic and simple thing but as soon as you start doing the exercises you see how challenging are the questions and reasoning behind it.

So far, I'm getting a great deal of valuable information from them, and can clearly see how to use certain techniques to make my business more competitive.

five forces

The cases are interesting and the final assignment is a great way to implement the topics that you will learn throughout the course (Five Forces, Capability Analysis, Competitors' Dynamics, Environment Analysis, etc).

I had completed by full-time MBA 18 years back but thanks to this course, now I realize how beautifully tools like SWOT, Competitor, Environmental, Five Forces, and Capabilities Analyses, as well as Strategy Maps come together to help us analyze the competitive environment for an organization, think strategically and understand (and recommend) firm positioning and value creation.

This is truly valuable because concepts such as SWOT and Five Forces analyses can easily become arbitrary exercises in speculation unless you see how they're used in practical decisionmaking.

prof. lenox

Prof. Lenox explained the concepts pretty well and now I am inclined to buy the complete book from which the chapters and lectures were derived.

I did learn quite a bit but I consider these courses as starting points and not complete courses which is why I am inclined to further my knowledge reading the entire book by Prof. Lenox.

Prof. Lenox is especially good at tying abstract concepts to real cases, and each week's case study further focuses the material on historical business situations.
