Anatomy & Physiology

Fluids, Transport, and Defense

Laura S. Kabiri

This course in the second A&P specialization uses a systems-based approach to human anatomy and physiology at the organ, organ system, and organism level. Two major body systems related to fluids and transportation will be explored in detail: the cardiovascular and lymphatic/immune systems. Course material will cover both the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of each system with direct application to human development and disease.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

1. Identify the major parts of the cardiovascular and lymphatic/immune systems;

2. Describe normal human anatomy structure and function for the cardiovascular and lymphatic/immune systems;

3. Relate anatomical structure and function at the cellular, tissue, organ, and body system levels to clinical diagnoses and dysfunction of the cardiovascular and lymphatic/immune systems.

Career center

Learners who complete Anatomy & Physiology: Fluids, Transport, and Defense will develop knowledge and skills that may be useful to these careers:
Cardiologist
Cardiologists diagnose and treat diseases of the heart and circulatory system. They require specialized knowledge of the cardiovascular system, which this course introduces. The course may provide a solid foundation for individuals interested in a career as a Cardiologist.
Immunologist
Immunologists study the immune system and its role in health and disease. They investigate how the immune system protects the body from infections and how it can be manipulated to treat diseases. This course provides an introduction to the lymphatic and immune systems, which can be valuable for aspiring Immunologists.
Physician Assistant
Physician Assistants work under the supervision of physicians and provide a range of medical services, including diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and performing procedures. This course can help Physician Assistants build a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology, including the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which are essential for their work.
Certified Nursing Assistant
Certified Nursing Assistants provide basic patient care under the supervision of nurses. They assist with bathing, dressing, feeding, and other tasks. This course can help build a foundation in human anatomy and physiology, specifically the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which can be valuable for Certified Nursing Assistants in their daily work.
Pathologist
Pathologists examine tissues and organs to diagnose diseases. They require a deep understanding of human anatomy and physiology, including the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, to effectively analyze and interpret medical data. This course can provide a valuable foundation for individuals interested in a career as a Pathologist.
Licensed Practical Nurse
Licensed Practical Nurses work under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses to provide basic patient care. This course helps to provide a foundational understanding of human anatomy and physiology, including the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which can be beneficial for Licensed Practical Nurses in their daily duties.
Surgeon
Surgeons perform operations to treat diseases and injuries. They require a deep understanding of human anatomy and physiology, including the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, to perform surgeries safely and effectively. This course may provide a strong foundation in these areas for aspiring Surgeons.
Registered Nurse
Registered Nurses provide direct patient care and administer medications, monitor patients' conditions, and help with treatments. This course may help build a foundation in human anatomy and physiology, particularly with the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which can be beneficial for Registered Nurses.
Pharmacist
Pharmacists dispense medications and provide advice on their use. They also monitor patients' drug therapy to ensure they are taking medications safely and effectively. This course provides an overview of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which can be helpful for Pharmacists in understanding how medications affect the body.
Medical Laboratory Technician
Medical Laboratory Technicians perform a variety of tests on blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids to identify and diagnose diseases. The course provides an introduction to lymphatic and immune systems and can help learners understand the functions of cells and tissues.
Health Educator
Health Educators promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles to individuals and communities. This course can provide a foundation in human anatomy and physiology, particularly the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which can be useful for Health Educators in their work promoting healthy habits.
Respiratory Therapist
Respiratory Therapists help patients with breathing problems to manage their conditions. They use various techniques and equipment to assist patients with breathing and clear their airways. This course may provide a useful foundation in anatomy and physiology, especially the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which can be beneficial for Respiratory Therapists in their work.
Paramedic
Paramedics respond to medical emergencies and provide immediate medical care to patients. This course may be useful for Paramedics, as it provides an overview of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, which are critical for understanding how the human body functions during emergencies.
Phlebotomist
Phlebotomists draw blood for medical testing and transfusions. Since this course covers both the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems and their functions, it may help learners understand the body's response to blood draw procedures and prepare them for a career as a Phlebotomist.
Cardiovascular Technician
Cardiovascular Technicians maintain and operate equipment that helps diagnose and treat heart and circulatory issues. They monitor patients' heart activity and blood pressure during diagnostic procedures such as angiograms, echocardiograms, and stress tests. Since this course introduces the cardiovascular system, blood pressure, and the lymphatic system, it may help prepare learners of this course to work as cardiovascular technicians.
