La Democracia y la Autocracia son conceptos centrales de las Ciencias Políticas, pero también debatidos. Por lo tanto, es importante entender las teorías básicas que subyacen en estos dos tipos de régimen.

Las últimas décadas han mostrado que el cambio de régimen se ha convertido en uno de los temas principales en los estudios sobre la democracia. El objetivo de este curso es analizar por qué y cómo surgen los regímenes democráticos a partir de regímenes autocráticos, así como por qué y cómo se produce la regresión democrática o cómo se produce la ruptura de la misma.

Tal y como demuestran los eventos de las últimas décadas, también necesitamos subdividir estos profundos conceptos en tipos secundarios que reflejan las deficientes formas de democracia o las formas moderadas de autocracia.

En particular, a partir de 1990 podemos ver que la democracia y la autocracia han seguido caminos diferentes, y hemos sido testigos del progreso y de la regresión en el desarrollo mundial de la democracia; a menudo, con una considerable variedad de tipos secundarios de democracia o autocracia.
