Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked by a buildup of plaque, a sticky substance made up of cholesterol, fat, calcium, and other substances.
Causes of CAD
CAD is caused by a combination of factors, including:
- High cholesterol levels
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Family history of CAD
Symptoms of CAD
The most common symptom of CAD is chest pain, also known as angina. Angina typically occurs when the heart is working harder than usual, such as during exercise or emotional stress. It can feel like a pressure, tightness, or burning sensation in the chest that lasts for a few minutes and goes away with rest.
Other symptoms of CAD can include:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Pain in the neck, jaw, back, or arms
Diagnosis of CAD
CAD is diagnosed based on a physical exam, medical history, and various tests, such as:
- Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- Echocardiogram
- Stress test
- Coronary angiogram
Treatment of CAD
The treatment for CAD depends on the severity of the condition and may include:
- Medications to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and improve blood flow
- Lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise
- Procedures to open or bypass narrowed or blocked arteries, such as angioplasty, stenting, or coronary artery bypass grafting
Preventing CAD
