First impressions refer to the rapid, often unconscious, judgments we make about others upon initial encounter. This initial perception isn't just a fleeting thought; it's a complex cognitive process where we form a mental image of a person, evaluating their physical and psychological characteristics. These judgments are assembled with remarkable speed, sometimes within a mere tenth of a second, and are based on a wide array of cues. These cues can include observable characteristics like age, gender, physical appearance, and attire, as well as subtler signals such as posture, voice, and even the context of the meeting. Though often based on limited information, these initial assessments tend to be quite persistent and can significantly shape how we perceive, treat, and interact with individuals in various aspects of our lives.
